Ancestral Mathematics: I Stand As 10,000

2024 · Earth and ochre pigments on wood, painted with foraged natural materials · Commission

Maple frame, 1062 × 1062 mm (framed)
Two-layered painting, circle diameter 800 mm

A celebration of the ancestors as the soil from which we grow.

A square painting on a white wall. A large terracotta-red circle floats on a black ground, marked with white, yellow and pale blue symbols — spirals, crescents, stars and small rings.
Ancestral Mathematics: I Stand As 10,000, 2024. Earth and ochre pigments on wood, maple frame.

Inspired by a speech by Maya Angelou, the painting explores ancestors as the roots and soil from which we grow.

The two layers — the black square base and the floating circle above — explore what is planted and what grows. The square is made like an obi, the sacred house of the heart.
